121021 [Star of the Week] [Interview] miss A vs. miss A

Written By Regina Kim on Monday, October 22, 2012 | 2:53 AM

Miss A is back.

The group has pushed forth since its debut with an independent and strong image, and again it has stepped out to show its support for bold women with new album Independent Women Pt. III.

I Don′t Need a Man, composed and written by Park Jin Young, is about how women shouldn′t depend on their parents or their boyfriends economically.

Enews met with miss A to talk about its new album and promotions.
We can be cute, but...

Miss A′s Independent Women Pt. III serves as an homage to Destiny′s Child′s Independent Women Pt. I andIndependent Women Pt. II.

The members said, "The confidence contained in the song is just like what we hold in real life."

Min said, "Being bold and honest was what fit us from the start. I think that′s why a lot of women like us. A lot of our lyrics provide a release when sung at a karaoke. These days, I think men also like bold women more than calm women."

The group is as bold as ever, but some showed concern over whether Suzy′s new image as ′the iconic first love′, which she gained through the film Architecture 101, would fit in.

Suzy said, "I don′t think there′s a need for how I am onstage and how I am offstage to match. When I go onstage as a singer, the group′s color is what comes first, and it′s what stands out. Our members can all be pure, cute and pretty (Laugh), but since there are many groups who already do that, we plan to walk a different way."

A wider fanbase

Miss A has been on the scene for three years already, and it has three junior label mates that debuted after it. The group now ranks higher in JYP Entertainment, now that it has survived the big girl group war, after scoring a string of hits since its successful first step with Bad Girl Good Girl.

On top of that, even more attention has been drawn to miss A since Suzy made her successful big screen debut.

If the group′s fanbase was originally mostly made up of those in their teens or 20s, these days, it has broadened a bit more.

"I heard there are more fans in their 30s and 40s now," said Min. "Of course it′s not a bad thing if more people start caring for our songs. The rest of us may feel let down because only Suzy has individual schedules, but we′ve never felt jealous of each other."

The 2012 JYP Nation concert, a concert featuring all the artists of JYP Entertainment, was a wakeup call for the group.

Suzy said, "It was great. We′re already three years old, but we still haven′t been able to hold an exclusive concert yet. Our seniors already had many global tour experiences, so we could learn a lot just by being onstage with them. I hope we can grow up enough to hold our own exclusive concert soon, though it still seems a bit early now."

miss A will pave its own road

Although they started giggling and laughing aloud like normal girls their age when topics like love came up, the girls were mostly serious throughout the interview, talking about their concepts, clothes, songs and the harmony between their songs and the members.

The group may be pit head-on against big groups such as 2NE1 and Girls′ Generation, but the members said they have concentrated more on competing with themselves rather than with other groups.

"The important thing is to have a definite color for miss A. We started off with a lot of attention because our debut singleBad Girl Good Girl did so well. The singles that followed did well also, but because our first one was so successful, people compare it to the successes of our following singles. Winning against and overcoming ourselves is the biggest issue for us whenever we make a comeback," said Jia.

Min said, "The title of this interview could be ′miss A vs. miss A′, since that′s how it′s like for us really."
